14 page magazine + covers + typography poster
OVERVIEW
GOALS
+ Investigate multiple meanings for the word "present"
+ Use multiple meanings to create a 16 page publication (including covers)
+ Create a removable poster about typography pairings
CHALLENGES
+ Deciding a specific topic and direction for the magazine
+ Keeping cohesion throughout the entire magazine
+ Spreads must fit on 11x17 inch tabloid paper with 1/4 inch bleed
PROCESS
RESEARCH AND CONCEPTING
+ Mindmaping beginning with different definitions, branching to related topics from each definition, then discovering overlap between topics
+ I felt the most drawn to a psychology magazine with a pop culture emphasis
+ Most/all competing psychology magazines are aimed at adult women, so I wanted to focus on a teenage demographic
Mindmap and spread planning
DRAFTING
+ Implemented a "cottage-core" aesthetic to appeal to younger audiences
+ Made type more dynamic, especially in title spreads
+ Added paper texture on spreads for visual interest and cohesion
+ Altered sample photos to have a warm and hazy dream like quality to fit theme and for cohesiveness between spreads
Draft title 2 spread vs final title 2 spread
Color palette and type
FINAL SOLUTION
EVALUATION
+ Includes dreamy, romantic, and vintage qualities, combining collage and Rococo styles, effectively attaining the "cottage-core" aesthetic
+ Aesthetic choices unify the magazine
+ Collage used in title spreads and TOC create a dynamic and visually interesting spread
